Fire crews evacuated residents of a Des Moines neighborhood, north of Grand Avenue late this (Friday) morning, because of a natural gas leak.
Des Moines Fire Department Lieutenant Mickey Kinzenbaw says construction crews working near the corner of 28th and High Streets hit a two-inch gas line, around 11:15am.
Fire crews evacuated three multi-family housing structures, and asked several residents to "shelter in place." Police blocked off traffic on High Street. Hazardous Materials crews monitored the air and set up a safe-zone, until MidAmerican Energy crews were able to shut off the gas and fix the break.
There were no injuries.
