An Ankeny, Iowa woman credits a smart phone app for alerting her to a pregnancy problem.
Mackenzi Johnson says she used the free "Count the Kicks" app to track her baby's movements, and she noticed a change.
Doctors decided to deliver her baby right away. Turns out, the umbilical cord was wrapped around her baby's neck three times.
Johnson says doctors told her the baby would not have survived had she not noticed the change in movement.
Earlier this summer another local woman, Emily Eckhoff shared a similar experience. She too used the app, and spotted a pregnancy problem, that threatened her baby's life.
Emily Price, with www.healthbirthday.org, says a Nebraska woman recently had a similar experience.
"The Count the Kicks app is a powerful tool for moms in the third trimester. We encourage all moms to download this app at 28 weeks, and 26 weeks if they’re high risk,” said Dr. Neil Mandsager, a perinatologist at Mercy Des Moines, where the babies were born.
