Iowans claim forgotten fortunes during State Fair

The Iowa State Treasurer's Office says people claimed more than 600-thousand dollars worth of forgotten assets during this year's Iowa State Fair.

State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald says there were more than 8,000 individual claims, and the largest claim was 63-thousand dollars.

Officials say people most often forget about  old savings or checking accounts, stocks, un cashed checks, life insurance policies, utility deposits, and safe deposit box contents.

The Treasurer's Office reports the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt program has returned over $231 million in unclaimed property to more than 538,000 people since its creation in 1983.

Unclaimed property refers to money and other assets held by financial institutions or companies that have lost contact with the property's owner for a specific period of time. State law requires these institutions and companies to annually report unclaimed property to the state treasurer's office. The assets are then held until the owner or heir of the property is found.
