Iowa pet water rescue experts headed to Texas

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is sending a couple of people to Texas, with experience in rescuing pets from floods.

Tom Colvin says they're also getting trailers ready, in case they need to help rescue horses from the Texas flooding.

He says in the city the size of Houston, it's likely there will be thousands of stranded pets, placed in temporary shelters.

He as much data will be gathered as possible, so that the animals can be reunited with their owners.

Colvin says disasters such as this show the value of having pets micro-chipped, as sometimes collars and tags get lost in the chaos of a disaster.

Pets in Texas shelters before "Harvey" are being moved out of state, to make room for a huge number of pets, separated from their owners because of the hurricane and flooding.  The ARL of Iowa has already taken 20-such pets from a shelter in north Texas.   Colvin says they will be available for adoption soon.

Colvin says there's a domino effect, so they're hosting a "Clear the Shelter" adoption event the Des Moines area facility through Sunday.

He says they have more than 1,400 animals in their care now and placing those animals into homes would greatly impact their ability to help animals displaced by Hurricane Harvey and flooding in Houston, Texas.
