Ankeny teen charged in shooting

(Des Moines, IA)  Police say an Ankeny teenager has been charged in a shooting this week at 2644 Cleveland Avenue in Des Moines.

Police tell WHO-Radio News 16-year-old Donald Kern's case has been waived to adult court.

Kern is charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon and Willful Injury, Causing Serious Injury, after what police say was a dispute after an illegal drug deal.

"We did get tips through Crime Stoppers, and we were able to start putting the pieces together, and that led us to Mr. Kern."  Said Des Moines Police Sergeant Paul Parizek.

"Sadly for him, at 16-years-old these charges are automatically waived into adult court, so it's going to be a tough road ahead for him." Parizek said.

Police and medics were called to 2644 Cleveland Avenue after 8 p.m. Wednesday, where they found 16-year-old Cameron McKnight with a gunshot wound in the abdomen.

He was taken to Unity Point/Methodist Hospital for treatment and is recovering.
