Iowa Congressman David Young today announced he will host the 10th Annual Youth Leadership Summit on October 30, 2017 in the House Chamber of Iowa's State Capitol Building in Des Moines.
The Youth Leadership Summit was originally started by former Congressman Tom Latham in 2007 with the goal of empowering Iowa's youth to interact with their government, as well as mentoring the next generation of Iowa's leaders. The one-day summit is filled with nonpartisan leadership training and networking events and is free and open to all high school aged students living in the 16 counties of Iowa's Third Congressional District. Pre-registration is required and the deadline to register is October 20th. Due to space constraints, the summit is limited to 125 participants, so RSVP soon.
Iowan Mike Draper, founder of Raygun, the popular Des Moines based clothing and home and kitchen stores located throughout the Midwest, will be the keynote speaker. He will share his personal leadership story with the students at the annual Third District Leadership Summit.
"For a decade, the Third District Leadership Summit has empowered young people throughout the district and I am proud to continue this important event to provide tomorrow's leaders with the resources they need to be the best," said Congressman Young. "Mike Draper brings a unique perspective to the summit that the participants can use as a tool while they prepare for their futures."
Mickye Johnson and his team from the University of Northern Iowa will be directing an uplifting day that will help each participant further develop their leadership skill sets as they determine, develop and achieve their personal goals in high school and beyond. Mickye is the director of the University of Northern Iowa's Classic Upward Bound Program and is highly regarded around Iowa and the nation for his dedicated work with students.
There is no charge to either the students or their schools to participate in the summit and a free sack lunch will be provided to all participants.
