West Des Moines bans fireworks while Des Moines weighs issue

Fireworks was the feature at both the Des Moines and West Des Moines City Council meetings last night.

At a workshop session Monday afternoon, the Des Moines City Council talked about a possible ban of fireworks use. Most council members expressed anger at the sheer volume of fireworks use in the city during their "trial run" that allowed fireworks for a three-hour window July 4th.

A majority on the council expressed the desire to impose a ban on fireworks use in the city. But they acknowledge that enforcement will be tough, since the Iowa legislature made the sale of fireworks legal in the state.

Des Moines police say they will count on the public to help them gather information to enforce the new ban.

In West Des Moines Monday night, the city council there took the steps toward an outright ban, voting 4 to 1 to reimpose the city's ban on fireworks use by residents.
