DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Monday says the NFL players who took a knee instead of standing for the National Anthem over the weekend were disrespectful.
Reynolds told the football players that protested over the weekend, "Don't take a knee. Get out there and make a difference. Engage. Go into these cities and run for office. Support a candidate that you think stands for your beliefs."
She told seniors at Saydel High School and reporters that she was raised to respect the flag. She says young people "look up to these individuals" and she says it's important to show respect to the flag and the national anthem.
Governor Reynolds was at Saydel High School, north of Des Moines, to call attention to the importance of high school seniors filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The governor says the forms are used to qualify students for financial aid for college and should be filled out before the deadline to ensure students can take advantage of all grants, loans and other financial awards that are available.
