(Des Moines, Iowa) Dinosaurs have invaded the Science Center of Iowa. Des Moines is the first stop on a U-S tour of an exhibit called "Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family."
Science Center President and C-E-O Curt Simmons says the exhibit, created in Australia, features five fully articulated dinosaur skeletons. There are also some feathered interpretations of the tyrannosaur.
The exhibit features interactive activities and virtual experiences, which Simmons says will appeal to visitors of all ages. He says it's designed to encourage discovery, exploration, and learning.
Second and third graders from the Des Moines' Downtown School, and their teacher, Marja Bearda, checked out the exhibit today (Friday). Many students, armed with notebooks and pencils, scribbled details they learned about the dinosaurs, including proper spelling of the creatures' names. The students at the Downtown School told WHO Radio News they loved it, describing it as "Awesome" and "Huge," and they wondered how they got the skeletons in the building.
Bearda says her students were fascinated by the T-Rex and learned a lot about dinosaur research.
The second gallery features an impressive T-Rex named "Scotty." Nearby, visitors are treated to a virtual reality experience with dinosaurs. A hallway has a rural Iowa scene and a Des Moines scene, that features running dinosaurs.
There's also a mini-fossil dig for small children, and an IMAX production called "Dinosaurs Alive!"
The exhibit will be in Des Moines until April 22nd.
