DES MOINES, IOWA - A car was cut into two pieces and fell into a hole in a construction area near the Iowa State Fairgrounds just after 3:00 o'lock early Friday morning in Des Moines.

Des Moines police say the driver hit a large excavator at at the intersection of 28th and Dean Avenue, as WHO Radio News reported early Friday morning.  The impact split the car into two pieces, and sent the front half into a construction hole.

In the words of an officer reporting to police dispatch at the scene, "The excavator won."  

The driver was climbing out when emergency responders arrived.  Paramedics took him to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police are still investigating to determine whether speed played a role in the crash.
