Wayne County’s Mary Ellen Miller is working with two Iowa nonprofits to lease her farm to a veteran who wants to get into agriculture. They’re part of a national movement to help more vets become farmers.
Mary Ellen has conducted public health research, raised cattle, been a Republican Party activist, and served on the State Board of Education. She’s also executive director of 50-50 in 2020, a statewide group looking to get more women elected to the Iowa Legislature.
She donated her farm to the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust (SILT) in 2015. Now she’s joined the trust in recruiting a veteran-farmer interested in a low-cost lease.
