(Ankeny, Iowa) The City of Ankeny is naming Captain Makai Echer as interim Police Chief, effective December 25th.
The city recruiting a new chief, after Chief Gary Mikulec announced plans to retire after 14 years in Ankeny, and more than 44-years in law enforcement.
Echer's been with the Ankeny Police Department since 1995. She was promoted to sergeant in 2001 and lieutenant in 2008. In 2011, she was the first woman to be named captain, which is the second-highest rank in the Ankeny Police Department. Capt. Echer will also become the first woman to serve as Interim Police Chief in City of Ankeny history.
The City has begun a nationwide search for a permanent police chief and hopes to complete the process within the next six months.
