Bitter cold and light snow combine to make slippery roads


About an inch of snow overnight coupled with wind chills of 12-20 below zero in parts of central Iowa meant snow plows were kept busy clearing roads and major streets.

While not seeing the post-holiday crashes that were prevalent on Tuesday morning, roads in the state were mostly snow covered around 6am with the Iowa Department of Transportation putting over 400 snow plows out to cover state highways.

By 7:30am, most all the roads were listed as only partially snow covered. Many streets in the Des Moines metro area were also plowed so that there was clear pavement.

Now, authorities are warning about the cold weather to come the next few days up to and including New Year's Day:
