Des Moines fire official: Keep pipes & sprinklers warm

(DES MOINES, IOWA)  There have been dozens of reports of frozen pipes, and failing sprinkler systems, because of this cold weather.

Des Moines Fire Department Spokesman Brian O'Keefe says they've had at least 40-cases in the past week, and more than a half dozen just within the last 48-hours.   Suburban fire departments have also been busy responding to such cases.

O'Keefe says any pipe that's exposed to cold air, can transfer the cold through the pipe and freeze indoors, putting sprinkler systems at risk.   Property owners are being asked to check for areas where cold air's getting inside,  such as broken windows, vents, cracks in walls, or loose shingles.

He says ceiling tiles can be removed to allow heat to reach the cold pipes.  Experts say property owners should avoid using any open flames or blowers to try and warm up pipes, because of fire risk.

Property owners are also reminded that even if the indoor temperature is 60-degrees, pipes can freeze,

O'Keefe says any problems with sprinkler systems should be checked out by a certified expert.

Bottom line, fire departments want sprinkler systems in good shape,  so if there's a fire, they work.
