(WAUKEE, IOWA) Construction workers spent a lot of time in fast-growing Waukee in 2017.
The City of Waukee issued more than a thousand building permits last year, for projects worth more than 200-(M) million dollars.
Two-hundred-thirty-seven (237) were for single-family homes, 129-were for townhomes, 21-were for multi-family developments, and multiple permits for additions and improvements.
Waukee also granted permits for 51-commercial projects, including one for a $1.3 million new Apple data center. Crews are expected to break ground on that development this spring. Plans were also unveiled this week for a large Fridley Theatres multi-plex project. Developers expect the theater complex to open in November.
Waukee Development Director Brad Deets tells WHO Radio News the total last year was down slightly from a record-setting 2016, but it was their second strongest year. He says they were within six million dollars of last year's total valuations. He says the interest in commercial building is a reflection of the overall growth in population, as residents want more retail and services.
It is certainly a busy time in Waukee,” said Waukee Mayor Bill Peard. “The community is vibrant and growing, and that continues to draw developers, builders and businesses to our city. We are thrilled that so many of them are willing to invest in Waukee.”
