(DES MOINES, IOWA) The flu is now considered "widespread" in Iowa. State Epidemiologist Dr. Patricia Quinlisk tells WHO Radio News there are flu-outbreaks across the state, and there have been six flu-related deaths so far this season. Dr. Quinlisk says it's been reported in long term care centers, and she expects it will start spreading quickly in schools. She's urging parents to vaccinate their kids if they haven't already done so.
Dr. Quinlisk says usually the vaccine for this strain is between 30-and-70-percent effective at easing flu symptoms. She says it's very effective at keeping someone from becoming so sick, they need to be hospitalized. She says a report that this year's vaccine was not very effective, was based on one report, and she's confident that the flu vaccine is the best protection available against influenza.
Iowa recorded four flu-related deaths today (Friday). Dr. Quinlisk says it's concerning they had several deaths reported at the same time. She says that could be a signal that it's spreading quickly.
She says they've heard hospitals, long term care facilities, and rehab facilities are starting to change visitation rules, due to community flu outbreaks.
