(DES MOINES, IOWA) Iowa lawmakers are back in Des Moines, as the legislative session gets underway. State lawmakers will have some challenging issues this session, including the budget, spending, and taxes.
Leaders in the House and Senate are promising quick action to replace money taken from state reserves to cover spending that exceeded tax revenue in the last fiscal year.
Leaders say also they'll also need to look at tax changes, on the heels of federal tax reform. Iowa couples making 100-thousand dollars a year would see their taxes federal taxes drop nearly three percent, but their state taxes would rise nearly four percent unless changes are made in Iowa tax law.
Governor Kim Reynolds says among her priorities is a water quality bill, but the House and Senate each have bills that would need to be reconciled, before such legislation could be passed.
