Did John McCain Start The Russian Collusion Investigation?

I had a conversation on my Wednesday show with a political opperator who also works in the field of data.  He was wondering if we were about to reach the end of the Trump/Russia collusion investigation and could move on to talking about issues.

He based his discussion on what we are learning about the infamous "dossier," an opposition research document funded by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.  While the man who compiled the document, Christopher Steele, claims that up to 75% of the allegations in the dossier are true, he hasn't said what material is true or provided any evidence.

At question is to what extent an unverified document containing salacious rumors led to an investigation of the Trump campaign by the FBI DURING the campaign.  And who was responsible for leaking the info to the media?

And what role did John McCain play in all of this?

In October, McCain denied providing the dossier to BuzzFeed and said that he only gave the material to the FBI. “I gave it to no one except for the director of the FBI. I don’t know why you’re digging this up now,” McCain told the Daily Caller during what the news website described as a testy exchange.

...A January 11 statement from McCain attempted to explain why he provided the documents to the FBI but did not mention how he came to possess the dossier or whether he knew who funded it.

McCain is maintaining that the document passed through his hands to the FBI because he believed that the allegations contained in the dossier may have merited investigation.  But, until now, we don't know how he got the dossier.

The founders of the controversial opposition research firm Fusion GPS admitted that they helped the researcher hired to compile the infamous, largely discredited 35-page dossier on President Donald Trump to share the document with Sen. John McCain.

The goal of providing the dossier to McCain, the Fusion GPS founders explained, was to pass the information contained in the questionable document to the U.S. intelligence community under the Obama administration.

The next shoe to drop is whether the Obama Administration used this oppo research to spy on an opposing party's Presidential candidate -  and utilized federal agencies to leak damaging rumors to the media in advance of the election.
