Wal-Mart is closing or converting 63 Sam's Clubs, although the Des Moines Register has been told that none of them are in Iowa or Nebraska.
That's not the case in Illinois, as a local television station reports that the Moline location will close on January 26.
Note the use of the word, "converting." We've talked on the show about the impact of e-commerce on brick-and-mortar retailers and Wal-Mart is determined to be a player.
Additionally, about 10 to 12 Sam's Club stores are slated to be closed temporarily as the retailer converts them to regional distributional centers to help ramp up its ability to fulfill online as well as in-store purchases.
A number of progressives have been pointing out that some of the companies that have announced bonuses and pay increases for employees due to the GOP tax cut have also announced layoffs. But what the left won't mention is that many of these companies are reorganizing for the electronic age- laying off in one department but HIRING in another. I think job reports will ultimately point to a net INCREASE in jobs at these companies.
