Iowa man pulled over going 104 MPH, shot and killed by police

FLOYD, IOWA - A police chase hit 104 miles per hour before police say the driver pulled over, then hit an officer with his car, and was shot and killed by police.

Just after 8:30 Wednesday night the Floyd County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a man was pointing a gun at his own head while in a car at Love's Truck Stop in Floyd, in northeast Iowa.

Before officers got to the truck stop, the man drove off, heading southbound on Highway 218.

At 8:49 p.m., an officer in Nashua stopped a car speeding on Highway 218 at 104 mph.

According to KCRG TV 9, when the officer stopped the car, he says the driver got out and pointed a handgun at his own head.

The Bremer County Sheriff's Office, Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office, Nashua Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol responded, and negotiated with the driver.

After about 40 minutes, the driver fired a shot from inside the car, but wasn't hurt.  Officers approached the car and say the man resisted being taken into custody, and drove forward, hitting an officer.

Two officers at the scene fired shots and hit the suspect, who died at the scene.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is still investigating the incident.

The name has not been released of the suspect who died, as relatives are still being notified.
