A website features a petition in support of food stamps for pets.

Currently, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Benefits only cover food for people. Those in favor of the idea say a family’s financial situation can change and this would prevent families from having to give up a pet.
The petition has over 86,000 signatures. It needs 90,000 to be presented to the USDA, which administers the food stamp program.
I am a Ronald Reagan Republican. I believe we need a thriving economy which supports a social safety net that ensures the dignity of every American. I support the food stamp program.
However, I am also a former budget chair for the Iowa Senate. I know there's finite resources for EVERY program. I would LIKE to believe that there are enough animal lovers in the US to ensure that poor animals are receiving the care they need and could avoid taking resources away from the people that need it.
