A bill that would ban the use of automated traffic cameras by Iowa's cities and counties has cleared a key hurdle in the Iowa Senate.
The Iowa Senate Judiciary Committee voted 11-to-10 to send the bill to the full Senate for debate.
Committee chairman, Sen. Brad Zaun of Urbandale says Sen. Tony Bisignano (D-Des Moines) objected because it interferes with home rule by cities and counties.
However, Zaun says he picked up support from Cedar Rapids-area lawmakers in the wake of the hiring of collections agents by Cedar Rapids to collect traffic camera tickets.
A similar bill is working through the Iowa House as well.
