Former Des Moines, Iowa dentist gets prison time

(DES MOINES, Iowa)  A former Des Moines dentist has been sentenced to 20-months in prison, for illegally obtaining hydrocodone and being  a user and addict of a controlled substance, in possession of numerous firearms.  

Thirty-nine-year old Shawn Kerby will also have to pay  $15,000 fine.  

Kerby practiced dentistry at Kerby Family Dentistry and Bright Smiles Family Dental.  

A plea agreement states Kerby was addicted to opiates, including hydrocodone.

He admitted prescribing the medication to patients, even though there was no medical need, and asking 

them to give him the pills.

Authorities executed a search warrant December 1st, 2015, and found two handguns, one revolver, and three shotguns.   Kerby had been abusing hydrocodone while possession the firearms.
