Des Moines considers new river-sports attractions

(DES MOINES, Iowa)  There are plans to turn the Des Moines River, downtown into a water-sports "hot spot."

The city is looking at three main projects, at three dams.    The Center Street dam would feature white water rafting and wave surfing.

A dam at Fleur drive would allow people to float and kayak, and the Scott Street dam would be a calmer water recreation, destination- designed for fishing.

Engineers and contractors are expected to release details this spring.    Construction is not expected for another five years.

Iowa DNR River Programs Coordinator, Nate Hoogeveen tells our news partner, Channel 13, WHO-TV

addressing the core safety concerns of the dams is the only way to bring more recreation to the rivers and Des Moines.

He says this project addresses that by making sure that none of the features of drops plunge straight down and create this recirculating flow.
