Urbandale caregivers offered plea deal in abuse case

(DES MOINES, Iowa)   An Urbandale man and woman, accused of causing chemical burns to a severely disabled woman in their care, have been offered plea deals.

Fifty-one-year-old Katrina Eubanks and 54-year-old Garry Eubanks were caretakers for Airionna Bent, they were accused of giving her a bath with bleach and Epsom salt, then taking her her to Florida without permission.

Authorities say the Eubanks left Bent at a Tampa, Florida hospital.  They were arrested and extradited back to Iowa last October.

The Eubanks are charged with kidnapping, two counts of neglect of a dependent person, and one count of dependent adult abuse.

Online court documents state Katrina's plea agreement would require her to plead guilty to two counts of neglect of a dependent person and one count of dependent adult abuse resulting in jury.   She would face up to 10-years in prison on each count, to be served consecutively, not to exceed 30-years in prison.

Garry’s deal requires him to plead guilty neglect of a dependent person. A term of 10 years in prison is recommended as a sentence.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 28, 2018.
