Gun rights bill in Iowa is victim of Florida school shooting

Debate in the Iowa legislature over a bill to do away with the need for most gun permits has been shelved, due in part to the Florida shooting incident.

While the shootings were taking place Wednesday, the iowa Senate Judiciary Committee approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would put the rights to own, buy and sell weapons in the constitution.

But Judiciary Committee chairman, Sen. Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale) says after Gov. Kim Reynolds told reporters this morning she was not interested in the bill, he pulled another bill, SF 2106, that would allow most Iowans to carry a weapon without a permit from debate in the committee Thursday.

The measure would not have done away with the federal requirement that to buy a weapon the prospective owner must go through a background check.

The bill has to pass this week in the Judiciary Committee to see debate this year in the Iowa Senate under deadlines the legislature has approved.  There are no more meetings this week in the Iowa Senate. That means the issue is effectively dead for the year.
