Four brands of dog food made and sold by the Smucker Company are being recalled after tests found traces of a drug used to euthanize dogs, cats, and horses was found in 60% of the samples.
The AP reports that shipments of cans of Gravy Train, Kibble 'N Bits, Skippy, and Ol' Roy wet food have been stopped back after the drug pentobarbital was found in nine of the 15 cans of Gravy Train that were tested by a Washington, D.C. TV station.
Two dozen other brands were tested with no significant findings.
The investigation followed the death of a Washington state woman's dog a year ago. All four of her dogs got ill, one died, and she sent the dog food, Evanger's brand, out for lab testing. Pentobarbital was found in the dog food.
A spokesman for JM Smucker tells WebMD that extremely low levels of pentobarbital aren't risky for animals, but that the presence of this substance at any level is not acceptable.
A full list of the recalled products is available on the JM Smucker Company website.
