Survey: 97% say Downtown Des Moines is safe, clean

(DES MOINES, Iowa)  A study of downtown Des Moines perceptions, finds 97-percent of those surveyed say they feel safe downtown.  The results also found 97-percent rate downtown Des Moines streets and sidewalks as clean.

The Downtown Perception study of nearly 15-hundred local residents was conducted by Operation Downtown last year.

Other results:      

Safety perceptions have increased by an average of 9 percent in nearly all Downtown neighborhoods over the past six years.

The number of respondents who say they have shopped Downtown in the last 10 years has increased by 39 percent, while 38 percent and 26 percent more people have attended sporting events or cultural/arts events, respectively.

A total of 23 percent of respondents said they were likely to live Downtown within the next 10 years, up from 17 percent in the 2015 study.
