An 18-year-old woman was fatally shot near freshman housing buildings at Delaware State University early Sunday (April 21) morning.

Authorities said that Camay Mitchell DeSilva was shot around 1:20 a.m. She was rushed to the Bayhealth Kent Campus, where she was declared dead. Officials noted that DeSilva was not a student at the university. She was visiting a friend on campus.

The school closed down the campus on Sunday as police searched for potential suspects. So far, authorities have not revealed any details about the shooter or shooters.

Classes were also canceled on Monday, though regular business operations were expected to resume on campus.

"First, let me say that whoever believes that settling disagreements of any kind should be met with physical violence − including the threat of and eventual use of firearms − is simply not welcomed here," DSU President Tony Allen said in a statement.

"The young lady tragically killed was merely 18 years old," he added. "Although she was not one of our students, she was a daughter, a beloved family member, and a friend, and, senselessly, her life was cut short."

The FBI said it is assisting in the investigation.
