DES MOINES, Iowa - Firefighters returned to an apartment building in the 1700 block of Oakland Avenue Tuesday morning after the building was gutted by fire Monday night.

"The crews found some fire and smoke showing out of a corner of the building."  Des Moines Fire Department Division Chief Matt Porter tells WHO Radio News.  "It didn't take long to knock it down."

Dispatch audio reported holes in the floors, creating dangers for firefighters.

"We had to be careful... because we had a previous fire in the building."  Porter said.  "Structural stability, so we had to be cautious how we made entry into the fire."

The first fire was reported Monday night  by a man who was driving by and saw smoke coming from the basement.Porter tells WHO Radio News that the building in the 17-hundred block of Oakland was left vacant after last night's fire.
