President Trump has hosted bipartisan televised discussions of hot issues this year and his part of the discussions haven't been without controversy - as viewers attempt to determine what exactly the President will (or will not) support.
Today's meeting on gun issues was no exception. 2nd Amendment supporters were left slack-jawed, according to Breitbart:
1) The President appeared to reject national reciprocity for concealed carry permits.
2) He defended the idea of raising the minimum age to purchase an AR-15.
3) Then, in an exchange that captured the attention of the mainstream media, Trump told Sens. Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) that they were “afraid of the NRA” after they told him that their bipartisan bill to expand background checks had not included a provision to raise the minimum age to purchase a rifle.
4) He told Republicans to add more ideas proposed by Democrats to their bills, including an assault weapon ban.
While this type of talk may dismay Republicans, I've said on the show to focus on what local candidates are REALLY ready to support. As Iowa Democrats try to win back rural voters, do many of these ideas stand a chance? (SPOILER ALERT: No.)
I'll be chatting with Congressman David Young on gun control on the Thursday show.
