DES MOINES, Iowa - A lot of older neighborhoods never had sidewalks. They weren't fashionable a few decades ago.
Now ,especially on sunny days like today, people want to walk and bike, so the City of Des Moines is putting in sidewalks where there are none, one piece at a time.
"A lot of the property if you go south of McKinley, in some of the neighborhoods there, don't have any sidewalks at all, or you find sidewalks on only one side of the street." City Council member Joe Gatto tells WHO Radio News.
"A good project that we approved, that's moving forward is on McKinley from SE 14th to SE 5th." Gatto said.
"It probably should have been done decades ago, but we're looking forward to getting that done."
He says the city is also making good progress on putting in new, handicap accessible corner sidewalks at older intersections, which make it easier for wheelchairs as well as bikes to cross streets.
