MENLO, Iowa - Snowy roads get the blame for a head-on crash early Tuesday morning that killed one and sent to others to the hospital.

The Iowa State Patrol says the driver of an SUV lost control on snowy roads early this morning west of Des Moines, near Menlo, and crashed head-on into a Buick sedan, killing the driver of the car, 60-year-old Julie Compton of Bridgewater.

Sergeant Nate Ludwig, Iowa State Patrol tells WHO Radio News that Highway 25 just south of I-80 was shut down for several hours after the crash.

Road conditions re expected to get worse with the wind this afternoon.

"That's the key, when the wind kicks up and the snow continues to fall, and the temperature drops, you can expect road conditions to decrease."  Ludwig says.

"We ask people to remember to slow down because winter is still here."  He says.

In all, there were 119 crashes in Iowa between Monday morning and Tuesday morning, including an 11-car pileup on SE 14th Street in Des Moines about 7:30 Tuesday morning.
