DES MOINES, Iowa)  The Des Moines City Council has unanimously approved a property tax increase, of 20-cents for every $1,000 of a property's assessed value.

"We do have some things that have to get done."  Said City Council member Chris Coleman.  "We told the citizens it was a choice when they went out Tuesday (to vote) and we have to address this."

The measure means a property valued at $125,000 would see a $25 property tax increase.

The move comes after Polk County voters rejected a one-cent sales tax increase this week.  The council says revenue generated from the property tax hike will go toward public safety and infrastructure repairs.
