Attorney General: Greenfield not allowed on ballot

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller today says he's advising Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate not to certify Theresa Caulfield's candidacy for the Democratic 3rd Congressional District primary June 5th.

In a statement released this afternoon, Miller says the chapter of Iowa Code cited by the Greenfield campaign doesn't permit the Democratic party to designate her as "an additional primary election candidate."  He says the law allows political parties to fill vacancies caused by deaths or withdrawals only.

"It's not a do-over provision," Miller says.

Greenfield came up short in the number of signatures on her nominating petition, then asked the Iowa Democratic Party's 3rd District Committee to approve her as the fourth candidate on the primary ballot. That approval came after protests by some on the committee Monday afternoon.

In a Twitter message to her supporters Wednesday afternoon, Greenfield said she's calling it quits. Theresa Greenfield said it's a "hard pill to swallow".  She says now that she's not campaigning she'll "make banana bread!"
