DES MOINES, Iowa - It's going to be a messy Saturday in Iowa.
- Wind Advisory in Central Iowa until 4 PM
- Winter Weather Advisory in North Central Iowa from 7 AM Saturday to 1 AM Sunday
- Blizzard Warning in North Iowa from 7 AM Saturday to 1 AM Sunday.
A wintry mess is moving through central Iowa this second weekend of April. There will be blizzard conditions in northern Iowa with heavy snow and strong winds. 6+ inches of snow looks to fall in far northern and northwestern Iowa through Sunday and winds will be gusting out of the northeast up to 40 mph reducing visibility and leading to whiteout conditions.
In north Central Iowa, a winter weather advisory is in effect through early Sunday morning. This is where there will be a mix of precipitation, both rain, sleet and snow at times and it could make travel difficult in that part of the state.
For central Iowa, including Polk County and the Des Moines metro area, we are under a wind advisory as strong winds gusting to 45 mph are expected today.
Precipitation should stay primarily rain through the day with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. The rain will transition to a rain-snow mix through the evening with all snow by early Sunday. A lot of the snow will melt as it falls, so no major road hassles are expected through the Des Moines Metro. Temperatures will be colder on Sunday in the mid-30s with continued blustery winds. It’s possible the metro could see 1 to 2″ but a lot of the snow will melt as it falls, so may not really be measurable.
