Bettendorf lawyer charged with offering sex to pay legal bills

A special prosecutor's been appointed after police in Bettendorf charged a prominent attorney with indecent exposure, prostitution and 3rd degree sexual abuse.

Police charge that on January 18th, 66-year-old Stephen Newport was in his office with a female client.

Documents filed in Scott County District Court say Newport exposed himself and forced the woman to touch his private parts.  She fled, but later that day he called her, saying she could work off her legal bill if she would provide him with "oral sex".

Investigators had her call him on February 7th, recording the call, and the woman got Newport to repeat his offer of sex-for-payment.  In March, police served a search warrant at his office.

In a court appearance Tuesday, a special prosecutor was requested to handle the case. He'll be formally arraigned May 17th in Scott County District Court.
