Des Moines may ban roosters today, keep backyard chickens

DES MOINES, Iowa - The sound early morning roosters crowing may be coming to an end for Des Moines residents.

The City Council is expected to vote today on a proposed revision of the city ordinance regarding backyard fowl, specifically banning roosters, but allowing up to 30 chickens.

The revision also pushes the fowl into the back yards, of single-family homes only.  Current law does not   ban cages on the sides of homes, but the new ordinance specifies that cages may not be kept in the front of side yards of homes.  Backyards only.
