Warren County residents may see their old courthouse and jail torn down so a new one can be built.
The state of Iowa ordered the county jail shut down in January because of substandard conditions. A $35 million dollar bond issue to replace it with a building at a different location failed.
Tuesday, the supervisors voted to approve an initial plan that would demolish the current courthouse in the Indianola square, and replace it with one or two new buildings.
Officials hope to hold the cost of the new facility to $30 million-provided a bond issue gets approved by voters.
