One man hurt in fuel tanker fire in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa-   A tanker truck,  loaded with fuel caught fire this (Wednesday) afternoon on Des Moines' near northeast side, sending thick black smoke into the air and injuring one man.

Brian O'Keefe of the Des Moines Fire Department tells WHO Radio News crews were called after an employee of the Keck Energy Company in the 14-hundred block of Ohio Street, reported a truck fire, and flames were also impacting the building.

The first crews on scene took an injured man to a Des Moines hospital.  The nature and extent of his injuries are unknown.

O'Keefe says a second fire crew was called in and the fire was put out quickly, but an estimated 10-thousand of gallons of either gasoline or diesel fuel was released, but contained on the property.

He says it was a very hazardous situation, with more than a dozen other tanks, loaded with fuel nearby, plus 55-gallon drums containing fuel on site.
