Strong storms cause tree damage in western Iowa

ATLANTIC, Iowa-  storms rolled through west and southwest Iowa today, packing 60-to-70 mph winds and heavy rain.   This photo by Jeff Morenz , found on the National Weather Service-Des Moines Twitter feed, shows tree damage in Atlantic, Iowa.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 3 p.m. for the following counties:

Appanoose, Decatur, Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Wayne, Davis, Wapello, Des Moines County, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, and Van Buren.

Most of the state is under a heat advisory.  An excessive heat warning is in effect for far northeast  Iowa.
