Flood Recovery Help #1: "Where do I put my flood debris?"

posted by Gary Barrett -

As central Iowans clean out their basements, homes and businesses from the past weekend's flooding, many people are asking how to get rid of the flood debris they find.

The answer depends on the city.  Here's the best rundown we have as of this day:

Des Moines:

  • Des Moines residents have three options for disposing of flood damage items.

    • Curbside Pickup After City Inspection
      • Move water damaged property to the curb.
      • Call 2-1-1 for a home inspection
      • Items will be picked up curbside.
    • Take Flood Damaged Items to Neighborhood Drop Off Site
      • Drop off items from 7 AM to 7 PM on Tuesday, July 3rd and Thursday, July 5th through Saturday, July 7th from 7AM to 7 PM.
      • Appliances and tree limbs or other tree debris WILL NOT be accepted at these sites. Tree debris should be handled as normal for stickered curb side collection or taken to a scheduled SCRUB location. See information regarding appliance drop off below.
      • Proof of residency is required.
      • Following are the five locations:

        • Northwest Aquatic Center Parking Lot 4915 Madison Avenue
        • Beaverdale Park 3333 Adams Avenue
        • Grandview Park Parking Lot Guthrie Avenue & E.32 Street intersection
        • Birdland Park Parking Lot Birdland Drive & Saylor Roouth Side Library Parking Lot 1111 Porter Avenue
    • Put Flood Damaged Item Out of Regular Trash Collection Day
      • Curbside pickup will continue as normal with the regular guidelines.
      • If it fits in your container there is no additional charge.
      • If it doesn't fit in your container, you will need a large item sticker
      •  other items need stickers.
      • Yard waste and tree debris should be handled as normal for stickered curb side collection or taken to a scheduled SCRUB.
    • Flood Damaged Appliances

    • Residents may take appliances at no charge to:

      • Appliance Recycling Center 918 SE 21st Street, Des Moines Monday - Friday, 8 am to 5 pm

West Des Moines:

  1. Metro Waste Authority’s Extra Trash and Large Item Sticker Program is available for West Des Moines residents who have damaged items they would like to have collected at their curbside on their normal garbage collection day. The cost of the stickers pays for the program, and the larger the item, the more it will cost for curbside collection.
