Huge tree falls in Des Moines, just before school lets out

DES MOINES, Iowa-  Residents of a quiet Des Moines neighborhood heard a loud noise this (Friday) afternoon, and then their electricity went out.   Roberta Victor tells WHO Radio News she heard a loud bang and rushed outside to find that a neighbor's oak tree had fallen into 56th Street, just blocks north of Grand Avenue.  Victor says part of the huge tree fell on power lines and caused sparking.

She says the timing was fortunate, because the tree fell not long before area schools let out for the day, and a lot of kids use the 56th Street sidewalk.   The children and their parents showed up not long after the tree fell and were amazed at the site, chattering about it all the way home.
