DES MOINES -- Fire under the Fleur Drive bridge just south of Grand Avenue forced the closure of the southbound lanes of Fleur for awhile.
The fire was first reported around 2:30pm. A Des Moines Police officer who investigated said it looked like the fire was from the belongings of a homeless person.
Thick billows of smoke blocked all visibility on the southbound Grand Avenue lanes, as you can see in the picture above from Eugene McGrath on Facebook.
Police had the southbound lanes of Fleur shut down for a while until the fire was under control and the smoke diminished. City engineers also checked the structure of the bridge while the street was closed to ensure it was sound.
The roadway was reopened a short time later.
