Polk County Sheriff Retiring in December

WHO-TV

POLK COUNTY, Iowa —  After 49 years in law enforcement, Polk County Sheriff Bill McCarthy is ready to hang up the badge.

WHO Channel 13 reports McCarthy's last day coming up on December 14th.

McCarthy's been the Polk County Sheriff since 2008 and has also served as Des Moines Police Chief.

The Polk County Board of Supervisors now has two options. They can either appoint a sheriff to serve until the 2020 general election, or they can call for a special election to replace McCarthy.
