Witnesses watch man walk into Des Moines River, go under

DES MOINES, Iowa - Witnesses tell police they watched a man walk into the Des Moines River Saturday near the Grand Avenue Bridge, and disappear under the water about 30 feet off the bank.

Police were called at 12:45 p.m. Saturday and shut down the Grand Avenue Bridge over the river as they used boats to search for the man, with no success.  A water rescue team took over the search, as a recovery operation, and found the body.

The bridge was closed to traffic for several hours during the search and recovery.

"A lot of thoughts about why somebody would have gone into the water when it is this cold."  Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek tells WHO-TV Channel 13.

"You know, you can draw your own conclusions, but it doesn't seem like something anyone would do recreationally." Parizek said.

An autopsy is being done.
