The Coldest Cities In The US

Did you hear my interview earlier this week with the State Climatologist for Iowa, Justin Glison?  Justin talked about the weather patterns in the state this winter.  We've had a lot of days that have been warmer than usual, but even when we're cold -  we're not as cold as THESE cities!

A new 24/7 Wall Street report reveals the 10 coldest cities in the U.S., determining their list by reviewing the minimum average temperature for the coldest month from 1981 to 2010 for every city with at least 10,000 residents.

So, where are people freezing the most in the U.S.? Well, Fairbanks, Alaska, where the normal low in the coldest month is negative-16.9 Fahrenheit, with the lowest temperature on record being negative-64.5 F.

  1. Fairbanks, AK
  2. Grand Forks, ND
  3. Williston, ND
  4. Fargo, ND
  5. Duluth, MN
  6. Aberdeen, SD
  7. St. Cloud, MN
  8. Bismarck, ND
  9. Marquette, MI
  10. Huron, SD

What's the numbers for Des Moines in January?  According to Intellicast:

January:    Average low:  14°  Average high: 31°    Record low: -30° (1884)

Record high:   67° (2003)  Average precip:  1.02"     Average snow:   8.2"

You'll recall Justin tell me that it has been warmer than usual in Des Moines -  so we've had NORMAL precipitation -  just NOT in the form of snow.  That will change this weekend, when 2 to 3 inches are predicted.
