Firefighters battle Southeast side fire in the cold

It was a cold night Sunday...and a blazing fire that firefighters had to fight Sunday night.

Crews were called in around 6pm Sunday to the Elmcrest Apartments in the 400 Block of SE McKinley Avenue.

When they arrived, firefighters found fire and smoke coming from a third floor apartment.  A ladder truck was used to gain quick access, and the fire was put out within about a half hour after crews arrived.

There were hotspots that had to be dealt with...and fire crews asked for the assistance of DART to provide a bus so that the firefighters had somewhere warm to rest between attempts at dealing with the fire.

No major injuries were reported. Three people in the apartment will be living elsewhere for awhile, officials say.
