Blizzard Warning, blowing drifting snow Iowa SNOW WIND MAPS

DES MOINES, Iowa - A BLIZZARD WARNING is in effect for the Northwest half of Iowa including I-80 west of Des Moines, and I-35 to the north through Sunday at 6:00 p.m.

Blizzard conditions are expected with heavy snow from the far southwest corner of the state, to the Northeast corner of Iowa near Decorah.  The Blizzard Warning area includes Waukee west of Des Moines to the Iowa/Nebraska border, and Ames north of Des Moines to the Iowa/Minnesota border.

The rest of the Des Moines metro area has a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY in effect through the day Sunday with several inches of snow and winds up to 45 miles an hour.

Travel conditions are expected to be extremely dangerous because of the blowing and drifting snow, with very low visibility and whiteout conditions in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

At 8:00 p.m. Saturday, travel is not advised in most of western Iowa, from just west of Des Moines to Omaha.  In North Central Iowa whiteout conditions are reported. Roads from Ames through Mason City are completely snow and ice covered.
