DES MOINES, Iowa - A bill being considered at the Iowa State Capitol would solve the problem many Iowa school districts are facing because they have run out of snow days.
School districts in many parts of the state have already exceeded the snow days they build into their annual school schedules.
Iowa law currently requires a certain number of school days or school hours, so school days that are cancelled due to weather have to be made up at the end of the school year.
Makeup days or hours are only necessary to get to the minimum amount of instructional time required under Iowa Code section 256.7(19), which is 180 days of instruction or 1080 hours of instruction. As long as schools have the minimum number of days or hours, they are not required to make up the time.
If the new bill is approved in the Iowa State Legislature and signed by the Governor, only five snow days would have to be made up, and the rest would be forgiven.
